Jack Crevalle are expert fighters. They run long, hard, and fast.
It has been my experience that a fish over 20 pounds will take around
40 minutes to bring to the boat. And even at that, they still have
plenty of fight. They are schooling fish and eating machines.
The fish caught below were found in a school of fish that must
have numbered in the thousands. I estimate the school to be 1/2
mile long and 300 yards wide. As I motored into the frantic school,
the sound of innumerable fish furiously surface feeding drowned
out the noise of the outboard motor. The huge backs and fins of
giant Redfish and Jack Crevalle covered much of the water's surface.
You couldn't find a square foot of calm water anywhere within the
inner perimeter of the this huge school.
Often Jacks run in schools of 30 or so. They will pop up to the
surface to blast bait and then disappear as they cruise at raceway
speeds looking for more food. Many schools like this will work a
bay at the same time. Often 3 or more schools are seen breaking
the surface in the same bay at the same time.
The Louisiana Jack Crevalle is a fantastic fish. They will test
your tackle and prove your knots. If you are out of shape, they
will let you know. Next time the doctor prescribes a stress test
for your heart, Just say no, "I think I'll go Jack fishing".
